The Americas Society commission will be awarded to one among four outstanding emerging artists from Latin America whose work is featured in the exhibition\u00a0<em>Spatial Acts: Americas Society Commissions Art.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The art commission is the final stage of an initiative to reinvigorate the lobby of Americas Society\u2019s building on 680 Park Avenue. The new space, unveiled two years ago as the David Rockefeller Atrium, pays tribute to the founder and honorary chairman of Americas Society and Council of the Americas\u2014a man whose vision of exchanging ideas and enhancing understanding of the Western Hemisphere to find solutions to the region\u2019s many challenges continues to drive the institutions he created almost half a century ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Spatial Acts<\/em>\u00a0features works by artists Esvin Alarc\u00f3n Lam (Guatemala), Elena Damiani (Peru), Marcius Galan (Brazil), and Jorge Pedro N\u00fa\u00f1ez (Venezuela). These finalists were selected after a two-step assessment process over the past six months. A nominating committee composed of Americas Society board and staff members, art professionals, and connoisseurs nominated 17 emerging artists from the Western Hemisphere, who by invitation submitted dossiers that included their preliminary proposals for the site-specific artwork. A separate selection committee of world renowned artists, curators, and collectors, as well as Americas Society board members and staff, evaluated the submissions based on criteria such as site-suitability, aesthetics, and alignment with the organization\u2019s mission and trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>The Americas Society commission awardee will be announced in late fall 2014 and the artwork will be fully executed and unveiled by fall 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artist Biographies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Esvin Alarc\u00f3n Lam<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1988, Guatemala City) lives in Guatemala City. He studied Communication Sciences at Rafael Land\u00edvar University in Guatemala City between 2009 and 2013. He has studied art independently and at the National School of Fine Arts in Guatemala in 2011 and 2012. His work has been included in group exhibitions such as\u00a0<em>Post\/Despu\u00e9s del Genocidio,<\/em>\u00a0Yantra Studios; Largo x Ancho x Alto<em>,<\/em>\u00a09.99 Gallery;\u00a0<em>El Museo de la Luna,<\/em>\u00a0S\u00f3tano 1; and\u00a0<em>Punto y L\u00ednea<\/em>, 9.99 Gallery, all in Guatemala City, 2014; and\u00a0\u00a0<em>Cinco D\u00edas<\/em>, Spanish Cultural Center, Guatemala City, 2013.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Elena Damiani<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1979, Lima) lives and works between Copenhagen and Lima. She studied Architecture at the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas and subsequently transferred to the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes Corriente Alterna where she graduated in Fine Arts in 2005. She received her MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London, 2010. Since 2003 she has had solo shows in Lima, London, Brussels, Madrid and Paris, and her work has been included in several international group exhibitions such as\u00a0<em>Idea of Fracture at Francesca Minini<\/em>, Milan, 2014;\u00a0<em>Weather Permitting,<\/em>\u00a0Ninth Bienal do Mercosul, Porto Alegre, 2013;\u00a0<em>Ciclorama<\/em>\u00a0at the Museo Tamayo, Mexico City, 2013; and the ICI touring exhibition\u00a0<em>Project 35 Volume 2<\/em>, 2012-2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Marcius\u00a0Galan<\/strong>\u00a0(Brazilian, b. 1972, Indianapolis, US)\u00a0lives in\u00a0S\u00e3o Paulo. He graduated in\u00a0Art Education\u00a0at Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Armando Alvares Penteado in 1997.\u00a0In 2003,\u00a0he received a scholarship to the Cit\u00e9\u00a0des Arts\u00a0in Paris, and in 2004 participated at the Art Institute\u00a0of Chicago\u00a0residency program through the exchange program from Instituto\u00a0Iber\u00ea\u00a0Camargo. In 2012 he won the PIPA prize\/ Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro and a residency at Gasworks,London. His solo shows include\u00a0<em>Geometric Progression,\u00a0<\/em>White Cube Gallery, London, 2013;\u00a0<em>Diagrama<\/em>, NC-Arte, Bogot\u00e1, 2013;\u00a0<em>Im\u00f3vel\/Inst\u00e1vel<\/em>, Galeria Luisa Strina, S\u00e3o Paulo, 2011;\u00a0<em>Common Area<\/em>, Galeria Luisa\u00a0Strina, S\u00e3o Paulo, 2008; and\u00a0<em>Informal\u00a0Geometry,\u00a0<\/em>Pedro Cera\u00a0Gallery, Lisbon, 2008. He has participated in artistic projects in Europe and in North and South America.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Jorge Pedro Nu\u00f1ez\u00a0<\/strong>(b. 1976, Caracas) lives in Paris. He graduated from l\u2019\u00c9cole Nationale Sup\u00e9rieure d\u2019arts de Paris, Cergy in 2006. In 2010 he participated in the residence Le Pavillon at the Palais de Tokio, Paris. His work has been presented at the\u00a0<em>12th Istanbul Biennial<\/em>, 2011;\u00a0<em>Dynasty<\/em>, Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Art Moderne de la Ville de\u00a0 Paris, 2010;\u00a0<em>In Transition<\/em>, Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami, 2010;\u00a0<em>31\u00b0 Panorama de arte brasileira<\/em>, Museu de Arte Contemporaneo de Sao Paulo, 2009.
