Álvaro de Jesús

Álvaro de Jesús was born in Caracas, 1983. He studied engineering in Caracas and Bordeaux and obtained a degree in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello and later a masters degree in IESA. As an engineering student he was particularly interested in theoretical physics and mathematics. In France he further advanced his knowledge of production techniques at L’Ecole National Superior des Arts et Métiers. He began his artistic career by investigating the relationship between art and science, his two passions, and found a largely overlook subject that would become the center of his work. Since 2013 he started doing thorough research on the subject by advancing his knowledge on both fields, and particularly drawing attention to the subject of morality and how art and science work together in shaping our ethics. He currently works at the LFA studio in Miami alongside world-renowned artists. The artist draws inspiration from kinetic artists and reinterprets the relevance of the movement as metaphor of the relationship between art and science.

Artist Statement

Art and science are the highest triumphs of the human spirit.

Science and art go hand in hand in shaping the way we think about the Universe, and our place in it. Science is a way of systematically exploring the world around us and discovering the hidden truths of the Universe. Art on the other hand is systematically challenging the status quo and making us reflect on the deeper meaning that scientific discoveries entail.

Morality is one area that is deeply influenced by art and science. Our views on morality are vastly influenced by our increasing understanding of nature, advanced by science, and the debate created on how we relate to that new information, fostered by art. Through my work I defend the thesis that art and science work together to propose moral values to society.

Even though neither science nor art are belief systems, both have common values that make them work: respect for truth, disregard for authority, intellectual honesty, elegance and beauty, search for reality, skepticism, free enquiry, experimentation.

The use of kinetic art is key to my goal as I watch how the observer of the art piece becomes in a sense a scientist by observing the optical illusion, being skeptic about what its being perceived and curious about how it works, looks at the piece from different angles and sets up experiments to find the truth behind the illusion, going beyond an aesthetic beauty and discovering the conceptual beauty behind it.

Álvaro de Jesús nació en Caracas en 1983. Estudió ingeniería en Caracas y Bordeaux y obtuvo un título de Ingeniería Industrial de la Universidad Católica Andrés bello y luego un master en finanzas del IESA. Como estudiante de ingeniería tuvo particular interés en física teórica y matemática. En Francia adquirió habilidades en distintos métodos de producción industrial en L’Ecole National Superiuer d’Arts et Metiers. Comenzó su carrera artística investigando la relación entre el arte y la ciencia, un área poco explorado, y se convirtió en el foco de su trabajo. En el 2013 comenzó un intenso proceso de investigación sobre la relación arte-ciencia y particularmente su influencia en la moralidad. Actualmente trabaja en estudio LFA en la ciudad de Miami junto a grandes maestros del arte. El movimiento de arte cinético es de particular inspiración para el artista quien la reinterpretado como un fenómeno que explica la relación arte-ciencia.

Declaración del artista

El arte y la ciencia son los mayores triunfos del espíritu humano.

La ciencia y el arte van de la mano en moldear la manera como pensamos del universo y nuestro lugar en el mismo. La ciencia es una manera de explorar sistemáticamente el mundo a nuestro alrededor. El arte constantemente reta el status quo y nos hace reflexionar sobre nuestra relación con los nuevos descubrimientos científicos.

La moralidad está también influenciada por esta relación entre el arte y la ciencia. Nuestra ética está ampliamente influenciada por nuestro creciente conocimiento sobre la naturaleza, avanzado por la ciencia y el nuestra relación con ese nuevo conocimiento, expresado por el arte. A través de mi trabajo defiendo la tesis de que el arte y la ciencia cooperan para crear nuevos valores.

Aunque ni el arte o la ciencia sean sistemas de creencia o de valores, ambos comparten valores que hacen que funcionen: respeto por la verdad, desestimación por la autoridad, honestidad intelectual, elegancia y belleza, busca de la realidad, escepticismo, libre investigación, experimentación.

El arte cinético es central en mi trabajo. Cuando alguien interactúa con una obra de arte cinético se convierte en cierto sentido en un científico. Observa la ilusión óptica, demuestra escepticismo ante la ilusión y curiosidad sobre cómo funciona, examina la pieza desde varios puntos de vista y realiza experimentos para descubrir la verdad detrás de la ilusión. Solo así obtiene acceso a una belleza de otra dimensión más allá de la estética, una belleza conceptual.
