Paul Amundarain

Biography

Paul Amundarain was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1985. He studied at the Central University of Venezuela in the school of Architecture in Caracas, where he lived and worked until 2013. He currently works from his studios in Caracas and in Miami. Paul has participated in several group and solo exhibitions in the U.S.A, and Venezuela.

About the artist’s work

Both the individual and the expressions of his unique insights are subject to different influences of social order. It is a feedback process between the being and his consciousness. In the specific case of artistic expression and its correlation with the socio-historical space, it is simply impossible to separate one from the other. Additionally, it is also impossible for art not to reflect the needs and traits of the idiosyncrasies of the environment it is created in. Undoubtedly, the work of art can externalize the social manifestation in different ways, not responding to a preset methodology. The art recognizes the emergence of social facts and in its own way it dissects, digests, and prints on a single and unique vision.

Therefore, the relationship between the figure of the artist and his physical environment, works in a diastole – systole movement. The influence of one over the other is simply eternal. Whichever the physical context is, – a city, the nature – it moves the invisible hidden strings that pull the creator’s mind towards the discovery of a personal language.

His work speaks about his social reality. His city is a living entity, an organic entity which suffers constant mutations. In the case of Paul Amundaraín, he is aware of Caracas’ socio-cultural degeneration and its relation with time. His hometown consists in a very complex city known for a high crime-related violence and a desensitized society in which life and death as values are completely distorted. Caracas goes away from being a metropolis, a city with measure, (metro, prefix. from the greek: measure) to become a metapolis an organic city, diffuse, homogeneous, singled out by an anarchic and chaotic force. (meta, prefix. from the greek: outside the normal limits of something) Both in a material – tangible dimension, (architecture, for instance) and in a human – sociological one.

Amundarain carefully studies the violence and aggression in a society separated by an undeniable abyss that radically differentiates the citizens even though they are forced to inhabit the same physical space of a place that seems to scream desperately.

The young artist understands how the economical, social, cultural and political dimensions have developed a series of consequences and have conditioned the present time and its urban and sociological landscapes. Caracas’ scars will always be present in its history. They have an eternal sense and are part of its contradictory identity. The scar of the paradox. Its social contrasts are manifested in its visual and spatial contrasts. In this way, Amundarain’s various languages and techniques correspond to Caracas’ heterogeneity. Caraquenian artist metapolis’ chaos and anarchy are the fundamental features of human relationships that he daily perceives. The artist takes the daily life and raises it to a higher symbolic level. He narrates the issues of our past, the problems of our contemporary moment and virtually, he predicts the future.

Dreams of modernity

Dreams of modernity, new series of works developed in the studio of the city of Miami. The focus of my research point has been exploring urban morphologies, zenith views and the relationship between man and city. For the realization of this series of works, I use photographs as a base for the composition of the work, images of buildings, modern architecture, aerial photos and highways, icons of modernity of a lost past.

The purpose of this work is to highlight the connections between what we were, what we are and what we want to be, the endless search of utopia.

I seek to show in my work through the idea of reflective materials where the viewer awakened by flashes of lights from a long sleep that holds us back and keeps us in the past, and continues to see their reflection.

The intention of drawing lines that evoke cities and architectural forms is to show that from the ruins or decay can always emerge a better future, hope, the quest for modernity.

Paul Amundarain nació en Caracas, Venezuela en 1985. Estudió en la Universidad Central de Venezuela en la escuela de arquitectura en Caracas donde vivió y trabajó hasta el 2013. Hoy en día trabaja desde su estudio en Caracas y en Miami. Paul ha participado en varias exposiciones grupales e individuales en Estados Unidos y Venezuela.

Sobre el trabajo del artista

El individual y la expresión de sus ideas únicas son sujetos a diferentes influencias de orden social. Es un proceso de realimentación entre estar y su ingenio. En el caso específico de expresión artística y su correlación con el espacio socio- histórico, es simplemente imposible separar uno del otro. Adicionalmente, también es imposible para el arte no reflexionar las necesidades y rasgos de las idiosincrasias del ambiente donde fue creado. Indudablemente, las obras de arte pueden externalizar la manifestación social en diferentes maneras, sin responder la metodología presente.

El arte reconoce la emergencia de hechos sociales y en su propia forma se disecciona, digiere, y impresiona en una sola y única visión.

Ahí entonces, la relación entre la figura del artista y su ambiente físico, trabajan en un diástole- movimiento sístole. La influencia de uno encima del otro es simplemente eterna. Cual sea que es el contexto físico,- una ciudad, la naturaleza- mueve las cuerdas ocultas e invisibles que halan la mente del creador hacia el descubrimiento del lenguaje personal.

Su trabajo habla sobre su realidad social. Su ciudad es una entidad viviente, una entidad orgánica, que sufre mutaciones constantes. En el caso de Paul Amundarain, él esta claro de la degeneración socio-cultural de Caracas y su relación con el tiempo. Su ciudad natal consiste de una ciudad muy compleja conocida por mucha violencia y con una sociedad desensibilizada en la cual la vida y la muerte como valores son completamente distorsionados. Caracas pasa de ser un metrópolis, una ciudad con medida a volverse un matápolis, una ciudad orgánica, difusa, homogénea, señalada por una fuerza anárquica y caótica. En lo material- dimensión tangible y en lo humano- dimensión sociológica.

Amundarain cuidadosamente estudia la violencia y la agresión en una sociedad separada por un innegable abismo que radicalmente diferencia los ciudadanos aunque sean forzados a habitar el mismo espacio físico de un lugar que parece que esta gritando desesperadamente.

El joven artista entiende como las dimensiones económicas, sociales, culturales y políticas han desarrollado una serie de consecuencias y han condicionado el tiempo presente y sus paisajes urbanos y sociológicos. Las cicatrices de caracas siempre estarán presentes en su historia. Tienen un sentido eternal que son parte de esta identidad contradictoria. La cicatriz de la paradoja. Los contrastes sociales son manifestados en los contrastes visuales y espaciales. De esta manera, los diferentes lenguajes de Amundarain y las diferentes técnicas corresponden a la heterogenita de Caracas. El caos de la metápolis y la anarquía son las características fundamentales de las relaciones humanas del artista caraqueño que el percibe diariamente. El artista usa su vida diaria y la levanta a un nivel mas alto y simbólico. El narra las cuestiones del pasado, los problemas de nuestro momento contemporáneo y virtualmente, predice el futuro.

Suenos de modernidad

Sueños de modernidad, una serie nueva de obras hechas en el estudio en Miami. El enfoque de mi investigación a sido explorar las morfologías urbanas, vistas cenitales y la relación entre el hombre y la ciudad. Para realizar esta serie de obras, uso fotos como la base de la composición de mis obras, imagines de edificios, arquitectura moderna, fotos aéreas y de autopistas, iconos de lo moderno y de un pasado perdido.

El propósito de estas obras es destacar las conexiones entre lo que éramos, lo que somos y lo que queremos ser, la interminable búsqueda de utopía. Yo busco mostrar en mi trabajo a través de la idea de materiales reflectantes donde el observador es despertado por flashes de luz de un largo sueño que nos detiene y nos mantiene en el pasado, y continua a ver su reflexión.

La intención de dibujar líneas que evocan ciudades y formas de arquitectura es para mostrar que de las ruinas o decaimiento siempre puede emerger un mejor futuro, esperanza, la búsqueda de la modernidad
