Artist Statement

My work is about the nature of learning and teaching through art.

The works, are literally the methods-I-need-to-invent to acquire, fix and transmit new knowledge about our own cultural history. Materials such as bitumen, crude oil, glass, eraser clay, photographs, advertising, among others, are crucial for my pieces for they represent our story derived from this particular location and time. I manipulate these materials and ideas using the strategy of “additive-subtraction” to open up the subject matter by “doing” and “undoing” and, “doing” and “undoing” again and again like some sort of sewing pattern until the subject is assimilated.

I have been greatly influenced by Rauschenberg and in particular by his Erased De Kooning as what I consider one of the most radical acts of art of the 20th century. His gesture of “additive-subtraction” -as Jasper Johns coined-, opened up a new fine-tuned method for me to analyze subject matter in this supposed era of over-abundance.
