Rolando Peña

Rolando Peña is a US-based Venezuelan conceptual artist. Born in 1958 he studied Design and Architecture at the Central University of Venezuela and the School of Visual Arts Christopher Rojas. Since 1963 he began his artistic activity in media as diverse as bodily actions, installation, printmaking, film and video. His work, associated with conceptualism, has turned towards a critique of consumer society and especially on oil exploitation. He has lived in New York, Paris and Caracas, cities where he has shown his work in several solo and group exhibitions. In 1987 he participated with a performance at the Documenta 7, Kassel, and in 1997 represented Venezuela at the 47th Venice Biennale. His work is features in serveral museums such as: Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Fine Arts, National Art Gallery, Arturo Michelena Museum, Museum of Prints and Design Carlos Cruz-Diez and Celarg Foundation.

Artist Statement

In the Barsa Encyclopedia Britannica Book of the year 1968, critical Stazis Gostautas wrote: “Rolando Peña (Venezuelan Artist), Founder and Director of the Foundation For The Totality (Group of Latin American art, based in NYC), is the pioneer Multimedias-Psychedelics, Happenings, Performance in Latin America “shows. Rolando Peña has developed an extensive work within the Theatre, Dance, Film, Multimedia Systems, he has collaborated with José Ignacio Cabrujas, Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg, Pierre Restany, etc. and from the 80s to the present he has worked a monumental work on the “oil” as concept, Icon Contemporary Art, framed at the junction of Arts, Science and Technology, with the complicity of the Astrophysical Claudio Mendoza. He has participated in international exhibitions, Biennials, Museums in major cities around the world, where he has received honors and awards. In 1982, receives CAPS, fellowship of N.Y.C. The Guggenheim foundation honored him with a fellowship (scholarship) for a year, for his project “Make Green Oil” 2009 The AICA (International Association of Art Critics), appointed him Master of Contemporary Art in Venezuela, 2010 and AVAP (Association of Artists of Venezuela), gave the Armando Reveron Award, 2012 Coinciding with the discovery of the Higgs Boson, he make a mural for the Metropolitan University in Caracas 2012, “The Higgs Barrel.” “Special Tribute to Rolando Peña” 3rd International Biennial of Merida, 2014, “Black On Black” Individual Exhibition Alliance Francaise Caracas, 2014, Venezuela Architects Association gives recognition “Master of Multimedia Art 2014”, Caracas. In 2015 presents his show “Black Gold” at the Arts Center of Maracaibo. Participates in the exhibition POP in Odalys Gallery, Madrid. In The Digital Art Exhibition in Paris presents “Variation Paris-Media Art Fair”. Present “Mene Digital” 1987 – 2015 in the UCAB (Universidad Catolica Andres Bello), commemorating the 75th Anniversary of CVA (Centro Venezolano Americano), Caracas.

Artista venezolano. En 1958 estudia Diseño y Arquitectura en la Universidad Central de Venezuela y en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas Cristóbal Rojas. Desde 1963 inicia su actividad artística en medios tan diversos como las acciones corporales, instalación, grabado, cine y video. Su trabajo, asociado al conceptualismo, se ha orientado hacia una crítica de la sociedad de consumo y en especial, sobre la explotación del petróleo. Ha vivido en Nueva York, París y Caracas, ciudades donde ha mostrado su obra en diversas exposiciones individuales y colectivas. En 1987 participa con un performance en la Documenta 7, Kassel, y en 1997 representa a Venezuela en la 47a Bienal de Venecia. Con representación en: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Museo de Bellas Artes, Galería de Arte Nacional, Museo Arturo Michelena, Museo de la Estampa y del Diseño Carlos Cruz-Diez y Fundación Celarg.

Declaración del artista

En el Libro Barsa de la Enciclopedia Británica del año 1968, el crítico Stazis Gostautas escribió lo siguiente:”Rolando Peña (Artista Venezolano), Fundador y Director de la Foundation For The Totality (grupo de vanguardia latinoamericano, radicado en N.Y.C.), es el pionero de los Espectáculos Mutimedias-Psicodélicos, Happenings, Performance de la América Latina“. Rolando Peña ha desarrollado una extensa obra dentro del Teatro, la Danza, Cine, Instalaciones Multimedias, ha colaborado con José Ignacio Cabrujas, Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg, Pierre Restany, etc. y desde los años 80 hasta el presente ha trabajado una monumental obra sobre el “Petróleo”, como concepto, icono del Arte Contemporáneo, enmarcado en la unión de Arte, Ciencia y Tecnología, con la complicidad del Astrofísico Claudio Mendoza. Ha participado en exposiciones Internacionales, Bienales, Museos, en las principales ciudades del mundo, donde ha recibido, homenajes y premios. En 1982, recibe El CAPS, fellowship, de N.Y.C. The Guggenheim foundation lo honro con un fellowship (Beca),por un año, por su proyecto “Make Oil Green”, 2009. El AICA (Asociación Internacional de Críticos de Arte), lo nombro Maestro del Arte Contemporáneo de Venezuela, 2010 y la AVAP (Asociación de Artistas Plásticos de Venezuela), le dio el Premio Armando Reverón, 2012. Coincidiendo con el descubrimiento del Bosón de Higgs, realizo un mural para la Universidad Metropolitana, de Caracas 2012, “El Barril de Higgs”. “Homenaje Especial a Rolando Peña” 3ra Bienal Internacional de Mérida, 2014. “Negro Sobre Negro”, Exposición Individual Alianza Francesa de Caracas, 2014. Colegio de Arquitectos de Venezuela le otorga el reconocimiento “Maestro del Arte Multimedia 2014”, Caracas. En 2015 presenta su muestra “Oro Negro” en el Centro de Bellas Artes de Maracaibo. Participa en la Exposición POP, en la Galería Odalys, Madrid. En la Feria de Arte Digital de París presenta “Variation Paris-Media Art Fair”. Inaugura “Mene Digital” 1987 – 2015 en la UCAB (Universidad Católica Andrés Bello), conmemorando los 75 años del CVA (Centro Venezolano Americano), Caracas.
