Tolland Mansfield

Biography

Tolland Mansfield is a multidisciplinary artist who divides his time living and working in the Bronx and Swan Lake, New York. His work has been shown in the Geoffrey Young Gallery, Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts, the National Arts Club, Carriage Trade, Re:Institute, and in multiple Brucennials. His last show “Spare Some Change?” was curated by Tim Goossens.

Artist Statement

I first approached painting the way most do: canvas, brush, paint. Unsatisfied with the restraints this approach put on me and my work I began to use unconventional methods and materials to push the boundaries of what a painting could actually be. Eschewing traditional practices has allowed me to dip into an almost limitless pool of media and I am constantly experimenting with a variety of techniques and subject matter. Refusing to adopt a signature style permits me to move freely from abstraction to figuration and back. There is no hierarchy involved and I tend to “build with the bricks at hand.” This credo has generated a body of work in which I repurpose everyday materials not historically associated with fine art and allow them to be placed into a contemporary art context.

Declaracion de Artista

La primera ves que me acerque a la pintura lo hice de la manera que casi todos lo hacen con un pincel, un lienzo y pintura. Insatisfecho con las limitaciones que esta aproximación me puso a mi y a mi trabajo, empecé a usar métodos poco convencionales y materiales para empujar límites de lo que puede ser la pintura. Evitando practicas tradicionales me ha permitido sumergirme en una piscina ilimitada de medios y estoy constantemente experimentando con una variedad de técnicas y tema. Negándome a adoptar un estilo personal me permite cambiarme libremente de abstracción a figuración y de vuelta. No hay ninguna jerarquía involucrada y yo tiendo a “construir con el ladrillo en la mano.” Este credo ha generado un cuerpo de trabajo en el cual yo reutilizo materiales del día a día que no son históricamente asociados con obras de arte y les permiten ser colocados en un contexto de arte contemporáneo.
