Paula Abreu Pita

Biography

Paula Abreu Pita was born in 1984 in Caracas, Venezuela. She received a degree in Social Communication at “Universidad Monteávila” in Venezuela. Interested in photography, she began parallel studies at “Roberto Mata Taller de Fotografía”. In 2008 she travels to London, where she studied art for six months at the “University of The Arts London”. At the age of 24, she moved to Madrid to receive a Master´s degree in Advertising and Fashion Photography at the “Escuela de Artes y Espectáculos Tai”. During her stay in Spain, Paula collaborated with magazines such as “Esquire”, “DXi Pocket” and “Looc Madrid”. Upon completion of her Master, she returns to Caracas. She worked at the TV channel “Venevisión”. In Caracas, she had her first solo show “Peças da Madeira” in July 2010 and in 2011 her second solo show “Entre Águas de Portugal”. The same year, she moves to New York to earn a Master´s in Fine Arts at “Pratt Institute”, where, in 2013, she had her first solo show in NY called “Buena Vista 504”. Abreu Pita has exhibited her work in NYC at Photoville, First Street Gallery, Rush Arts Gallery and The Greenpoint Gallery. Abreu Pita currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Artist Statement

Through my camera I observe the evidence of human gestures and the interaction of people with their environments. Specifically, I am depicting autobiographical spaces filled with traces of my family’s experiences. These images are part of a large series of photographs of my own family environments that include my grandmother’s house in Venezuela, my grandparent’s house in Lisbon, a now-closed cinema and a hotel in downtown Madeira (Portugal) that were once owned and managed by my grandfather, and a vacation house on the same island. Themes of displacement and transition recur, as the history of a family is traced and witnessed.

The images combine, in certain way, the appropriation of places and apprehended realities that become stories about rooms and matter enclosing emotional and cultural record. The familiarity arouses through the nostalgic and the content of loneliness in the forgotten. The walls and the objects confine the vestige and come alive interacting within the absence of witnesses, becoming the essence of the site they occupy.

My lens serves as a medium to feel the sensibility of fields where life has been lived. The photographs are evidence of the texture of the space and the experience of being somewhere where objects have been testimony of time and beholders of memories.

Biografia

Paula Abreu Pita nació en Caracas, Venezuela en 1984. Recibió su licenciado en comunicación social en la Universidad Monteávila en Venezuela. Interesada en la fotografía, empezó a estudiar a la ves en el “taller de fotografía Roberto Mata”. En el 2008 viajo a Londres, donde estudió arte por 6 meses en la Universidad de las Artes en Londres. A la edad de 24, se mudo a Madrid para hacer su postgrado en publicidad y fotografía de moda en la “Escuela de las Artes y Espectáculos Tai.” Durante su estadía en España, Paula colaboro con revistas como Esquire, DXi Pocket, y Looc Madrid. Al terminar su postgrado, volvió a Caracas. Trabajó en el programas de televisión “Venevisión”. En Caracas, tuvo su primera exposición individual “Peças de Madeira” en Julio del 2010 y en el 2011 su segunda exposición individual “Entre Águas en Portugal”. Ese mismo año, se muda a Nueva York a hacer postgrado en las artes en el “Pratt Institute”, donde en el 2013, tuvo su primera exposición individual en la ciudad de Nueva York en Photoville, First Street Gallery, Rush Arts Gallery and The Greenpoint Gallery. Abreu Pita ahora vive en Brooklyn, Nueva York.

Declaracion de artista

A través de la cámara observo la evidencia de los gestos humanos y la interacción de las personas en sus ambientes. Específicamente, estoy representando espacios autobiográficos llenos de rastros de las experiencias de mi familia. Estas imágenes son parte de una larga serie de fotografías de el ambiente de mi familia que incluyen la casa de mi abuela en Venezuela, la casa de mis abuelos en Lisbon, un cine que ahora esta cerrado y un hotel en Madeira, Portugal que mi abuelo manejo y fue dueño de ellos hace mucho tiempo y una casa de verano en esa misma isla. Temas de reemplazo y transición vuelven a ocurrir, como la historia de mi familia esta trazada y presenciada.

Las imágenes combinan, en una manera, la apropiación de lugares y realidades percibidas que se vuelven historias de cuartos y materia que encierra registro emocional y cultural. Lo familiar despierta por lo nostálgico y el contenido de soledad en lo olvidado. Las paredes y objetos limitan el vestigio y reviven interactuando entre la ausencia de testigos, volviéndose la esencia de el sitio que ocupan. Mi lente funciona como un medio para sentir la sensibilidad de campos donde la vida ha vivido. Las fotos son evidencia de la textura de los espacios y la experiencia de estar en un lugar donde objetos han sido testimonios del tiempo y contempladores de memorias.
