A group of four (4) private music composition lessons for anyone with an interest in discussing the tools, processes, and approaches needed to assemble a piece of music. All styles are welcomed, and no experience necessary. The sessions include materials, a reading list, and a listening guide.

About Manuel Sosa

Born in Caracas, Venezuela

Music performed by renowned ensembles and performers throughout the U.S., South America, Europe, and Asia. Commissions include North/South Consonance, Minnesota Orchestra, New Juilliard Ensemble, D.C. Dance Theater, New York Choreographic Institute, and Melton Foundation, among others. Founder and conductor of Quadrantis Ensemble, 2005. Fellowships/awards: Guggenheim Foundation fellowship (’11), Civitella Ranieri Foundation fellowship (’09); Yaddo fellowships (’03, ’04); Yaddo-White Flowers fellowship for composers (’07); Meet the Composer/Van Lier fellowship (’02-’03); ASCAP Plus Award (’05-’09); Juilliard teaching fellowship (’96-’99). Assistant to composer-in-residence, Grand Teton Music Festival (’87, ’90). Executive secretary, Guild of Composers Inc. (’92-’99). Essays about music and art in South America published in academic journals in Austria and Germany; research papers presented in conferences in Europe and South America. Composition faculty, New York Summer Music festival, and chair (performance activities), Venezuelan-American Endowment for the Arts.

 

Degrees and Studies

B.M., M.M., D.M.A., The Juilliard School. Composition studies with Jacques-Louis Monod, Joseph Castaldo, Stephen Albert, Robert Beaser, David Diamond, and Bruce Saylor. Seminars with Mark André, Georges Aperghis, Jacob Druckman, Beat Furrer, Adriana Hölszky, Earl Kim, and Helmut Lachenmann. Private harmony studies with Mary Anthony Cox; counterpoint, analysis, and conducting with Jacques-Louis Monod; Afro-Cuban percussion with Jerry González.

Pre-College faculty since 1997; chair, ear-training department, since 2006.
