Rafael Fuentes

The Venezuelan sculptor Rafael Fuentes (b 1979 -. Valencia, Venezuela) graduated from UJAP in Valencia, Venezuela, with a Bachelors Degree in Business. Growing up surrounded by art, as his father and late grandmother were painters, from a very early age he’s been attracted by art, colors, geometry and by how different geometric shapes give way to figures that resemble nature and everyday objects. At the age of 11 he started making art pieces with paper and cardstock and has never stopped ever since. In 2004 he began working with sculptural techniques for creating three-dimensional forms from two-dimensional patterns. The artist’s current studies are based on these techniques.

Rafael currently resides in Miami, Florida. U.S.A.

Artist Statement

Nothing escapes gravity. Not even light…

Through various branches of physics, calculus and geometry I capture the gravitational phenomena in a practical and visual way. Applying formulas from physics I extract the data needed to manipulate the space… make it as if there is some sort of external force that is attracting or repelling it. Gravitational waves as oscillations in the plane are affecting different parts of the works of art.

To carry out my study I rely primarily on physics and mathematics; also I make use of technology to configure the space as my works are created in two phases, one digital and analogous. The work of art is built with different software and utilizing derivative functions I draw the curves to create geometric objects, their position and shapes. I avail myself of descriptive geometry to convert these three-dimensional fields in two-dimensional shapes and from them I physically recreate what was built digitally.

Emulating this force that dominates the universe and which gives volume and defines all that is real, is what encourages me to pursue this process of spatial research.

El escultor venezolano, Rafael Fuentes (b. 1979 – Valencia, Veneuela), se graduo en la UJAP en Valencia, Venezuela, como Licenciado en Administracion de Empresas. Creciendo rodeado de arte, ya que su padre y abuela fueron pintores, desde muy temprana edad se sintió atraído por el arte, los colores, por la geometría y cómo las diferentes formas geométricas dan paso a figuras que se asemejan a la naturaleza y a objetos cotidianos. A los 11 años comienza a trabajar con papiroflexia, pasión que se extiende hasta la actualidad. En 2004, comenzó a trabajar con técnicas esculturales que permiten la creación de formas tridimensionales a partir de patrones bidimensionales. Los estudios actuales del artista se apoyan en estas técnicas.

Rafael reside actualmente en Miami, Florida. Estados Unidos.

Declaración del artista

Nada existente escapa a la gravedad, ni siquiera la luz…

A través de distintas ramas de la física, el cálculo y la geometría logro plasmar de forma práctica y visual fenómenos gravitacionales. Utilizando las formulas físicas de la gravedad extraigo los datos para manipular el espacio, como si existiera alguna atracción a un cuerpo ajeno a él que lo está atrayendo o repeliendo. Ondulaciones gravitacionales como oscilaciones en el plano están afectando diferentes partes de la obra.

Para llevar mi estudio a cabo me baso fundamentalmente en la física y las matemáticas; además me sirvo de la tecnología para configurar el espacio ya que mis trabajos son creados en dos fases, una digital y otra análoga. La obra es construida con distintos software y apoyándome en funciones derivadas sobre las curvas voy creando campos geométricos en su posición y forma, me valgo de la geometría descriptiva para convertir estos campos tridimensionales en figuras bidimensionales y a partir de ellas recrear físicamente lo construido digitalmente.

Emular esta fuerza que domina el universo, que le da volumen y que define todo lo real me anima a perseguir este proceso de investigación espacial.
