Miguel Braceli’s Public Art Project at Davenport Park

Miguel Braceli presents Here Lies a Flag in collaboration with students from New Rochelle High School in New York.

Miguel Braceli’s works are site-specific participatory projects centered on education by reimagining different ways of learning while working collectively in public space. One can participate in the creative process accessing the social, political, and experiential realities of different places as Braceli transforms the city into a school. Students, teachers, and the community can continuously intervene in the realization of a unique and unrepeatable work of art. The approach to art from an educational standpoint makes the action of learning spread as a scenographic project of the human condition, as the territory becomes a classroom. Braceli’s work is based on the vast tradition of land art, happenings, and public art, but in his practice these works are re-dimensioned from a formative space.

Here Lies a Flag is performed in parallel to the Parisian installation Arc de Triomphe by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude who wrapped the emblematic icon in immense fabric while, on the other side of the Atlantic, Miguel Braceli, lowers the American flag from the flagpole at Davenport Park in New Rochelle, New York. The park became a scene transformed by a new flag, overflowing and without borders. A 400-meter linear white cloth became the subject of debate among more than 50 New Rochelle High School students. The artist begins a discussion on the “uses and abuses of a flag,” substituting nationalism for a humanistic approach to borders that overshadows the idea of nation. During the performance, the students organized among themselves to build a new territory and write their words freely on the canvas.

Incorporating writing into the installation process Here lies a Flag transformed the project into an assembly, to be performed as the mind and body work in synchronization. The act of lowering the flag, rolling it up, and taking it to a grave that was dug in the middle of this natural setting, between the mast and the shores of the sea, is the culmination of the performative installation.

The act of burying a flag opens a poetical approach to the imagination of new possible geopolitics. This type of art modifies the perception that one could have of the public space as a work of visual art, playful and formative with critical intention. Braceli’s practice is a call to inclusion and reflection thanks to the staging of a series of elements that, although incongruous in appearance, are equally part of the final assembly of the work of art.

Here Lies a Flag is a project that had the participation of students from New Rochelle High School, with whom the artist plans to continue to collaborate for the development of new works in the city. The intervention, currently unfinished, will culminate with a commemorative plaque as a tombstone in the same place where the flag was buried. As a site-specific piece, the phrase: HERE LIES A FLAG reads on the plaque in memory and record of one of the installation acts in Davenport Park.

One cannot escape the Beuyssian connotations given the educational character that the professor of the Kunst Akademie in Dusseldorf gave to the installations and the photographs that were made of his performances. Photographs, aerial shots, and videos were taken at Braceli’s Davenport Park collective performance, autonomously existing in the creative process. The result of these visual “relics” derived from the installation will be displayed at various points in New Rochelle for the engagement with the community and preservation of the memory.

Miguel Braceli presenta “Here Lies a Flag” en colaboración con estudiantes de New Rochelle High School en Nueva York.

Las intervenciones de Miguel Braceli son obras de arte in-situ vinculadas a la acción colectiva que tienen como centro la educación. Al repensar la forma de aprender desde el espacio público, se participa en el proceso creativo acercándose a las distintas realidades sociales, políticas, y vivenciales del lugar, transformando la ciudad en una escuela. Estudiantes, maestros y comunidades intervienen conjuntamente en la realización de una obra de arte única e irrepetible. La aproximación al arte desde la educación hace que la acción de enseñar se propague como proyecto escenográfico de la condición humana y el territorio se convierta en un aula de clase. La obra de Braceli se asienta en la vasta tradición de land art, happenings y arte público, pero en su trabajo estas prácticas se redimensionan desde un espacio formativo.

“Here Lies a Flag” (Aquí yace una bandera), se realiza casi en paralelo a la instalación parisina de los artistas Christo y Jeanne-Claude en el Arco de Triunfo envuelto en una inmensa tela mientras que, al otro lado del Atlántico, Miguel Braceli, baja la bandera americana del mástil de Davenport Park en New Rochelle, New York. El parque se convirtió en un escenario transformado por una nueva bandera desbordada y sin fronteras. Una tela blanca de 400 metros lineales se convirtió en objeto de debate entre más de 50 estudiantes de New Rochelle High School. El artista abre una reflexión sobre los “usos y abusos de una bandera”, sustituyendo los nacionalismos por una aproximación humanista a las fronteras que problematiza la idea nación. Durante la performance, los estudiantes se organizaban entre ellos para construir un nuevo territorio y escribir sobre la tela sus palabras en libertad. Incorporar la escritura durante el proceso de la instalación Aquí yace una bandera demuestra que toda palabra escrita está hecha para la visión. El viento al ondearla realizará a plenitud su propio juego. El acto de bajar la bandera, enrollarla y llevarla hasta una fosa cavada a mitad del escenario natural entre el mástil y las orillas del mar para enterrarla, culmina el performance de la instalación en sí misma.

El acto de enterrar una bandera abre nuevas poéticas a la imaginación de nuevas geopolíticas posibles. Este tipo de arte modifica la percepción que uno pudiera tener del espacio público abierto en tanto obra de arte visual en tres dimensiones creadas con una intención recreativa, formativa y crítica. La practica de Braceli es un llamado a la inclusión y a la reflexión gracias a la puesta en escena de una serie de elementos que aun siendo incongruentes en apariencia, forman parte por igual del ensamblaje final de la obra de arte.

Aquí yace una bandera es un proyecto que empieza con la participación de estudiantes del Liceo Público de New Rochelle, con los que Miguel Braceli seguirá trabajando para el desarrollo de nuevas obras en la ciudad. La intervención, hasta ahora inconclusa, culminará con una placa conmemorativa a manera de lápida en el mismo lugar donde se enterró la bandera. La frase: HERE LIES A FLAG reza en la placa en memoria y registro de uno de los actos de instalación del proyecto de Arte Público de Davenport Park en New Rochelle.

Uno no puede escapar de las connotaciones Beuyssianas dado el carácter educativo que el maestro de la Kunst Akademie de Dusseldorf le dio a las instalaciones y a las fotografías que se hicieron de sus performances. En la instalación de Braceli en Davenport Park se hicieron fotografías, tomas aéreas, y videos participando de manera autónoma en el proceso creativo. El resultado de estas “reliquias” visuales derivadas de la instalación “Here Lies a Flag”, serán exhibidas en varios puntos de New Rochelle para el encuentro con la comunidad y la preservación de la memoria para la nueva escuela y la ciudad.
