Biography and Artist Statement

Cristina Matos-Albers was born in 1982 in Venezuela where she lived her childhood and part of her youth until 1999 when she moved to the United States to attend the United World College. In 2003 she receives her B.A from Ohio Wesleyan University where she studied Journalism, Latin American Literature and Photography. That summer, she embarks on a 9-week long road trip across the American Southwest with the sole purpose to photograph it. During the voyage she finds in photography more than a medium for artistic expression, it becomes her excuse to explore the world around her. Many years after the trip, her work as a photographer continues to be approached in a much similar way: highly intuitive and contemplative. As French curator Anne Louyot puts it, “she establishes a further relationship between eye and image.

[Her] intention is not for the spectator to simply notice the image, recognize it and continue on its way. Rather, the idea is to immerse oneself lengthily and then gradually resurface again; it is not only a visible journey, but also a journey into the invisible aspects of time. Cristina calls on us to create another, longer, more contemplative union with the image. Hers is an invitation to see the image as a door that one crosses into a poetic dream, inhabited by forms and primary colors. Cristina reestablishes that mysterious distance that early photographers maintained with their subjects. She chooses her subject but not the way it will turn itself into an image. Something escapes; a furrow opens up in the image through which the spectator can enter it. The image is not closed; it has a life of its own. Cristina’s photographs thus seem to paint with seeing.”

As an artist, she has a keen eye for detail, structure and form, and her work often experiments with the thin line between documentary and fine art. Cristina has turned light onto a frequent subject on her imagery and not just a mean by which a photographer creates.

She has photographed extensively in Europe and the Americas and continues to participate in renowned art fairs, collectives and exhibits in cities like Toronto, Caracas and Seoul. Several private collectors in France, South Korea, Panama, Venezuela, Canada and the United States have acquired her photographs.

A full-time artist and freelance photographer, Cristina divides her time between personal projects and teaching. In 2006, she became staff of Roberto Mata Taller de Fotografía in Caracas, and in 2013 founded The Developing Tank, a photography school in Canada. Her most recent project, La Camaradería, is allowing her to expand her workshops to other countries and online platforms.

Also, she is the author of a children’s book that brings fine-art photography to the hands of young readers; in 2010 Editorial Alfaguara published Veo, Veo ¿Qué ves? 1,2,3 for Latin American audiences.

Cristina Matos-Albers nace en Venezuela en 1982 donde vivió su infancia y parte de su juventud hasta 1999 cuando se mudó a los Estados Unidos para asistir al United World College. En el 2003 obtiene su licenciatura de la Universidad Ohio Wesleyan donde estudió Periodismo, Literatura y Fotografía. Ese mismo verano, realizó una travesía por tierra durante 9 semanas por el suroeste americano con el propósito de fotografiarlo. Durante el recorrido, ella encuentra en la fotografía más que un medio de expresión artística, sino una excusa para explorar el mundo que le rodea. Mucho años después del viaje, su acercamiento a la fotografía sigue siendo muy similar: altamente intuitiva y contemplativa. Tal como lo describe la curadora de arte francesa Anne Louyot, “Ella establece otra relación entre el ojo y la imagen. Cristina propone al espectador que no se trata solamente de captar , reconocer y seguir de largo. Se trata de sumergirse largamente, y de emerger lentamente. Reconstituir, con la mirada, el camino del color, sus movimientos y sus fugas. Es un paseo no solamente en lo visible, sino también en lo invisible del tiempo. Cristina nos llama a tejer otro vinculo con la imagen, mas largo, mas meditativo. Es una invitación a ver la imagen como una puerta para entrar en un ensueño poético, habitado de formas y colores primarios. Cristina restablece esta misteriosa distancia que los primeros fotógrafos mantenían con sus sujetos. Ella escoge su sujeto, pero no la manera con que él se hará imagen. Algo escapa, se abre una ranura en la imagen por donde el espectador puede penetrar. La imagen no está cerrada, ella anda por si sola. La fotografía de Cristina, pues, parece pintar con la visión.”

Como artista se interesa por el detalle, la estructura y la forma, y su trabajo frecuentemente experimenta con la delgada línea entre registro y arte. Cristina se aproxima a la luz como sujeto y no como un medio por el cual un fotógrafo crea la imagen.

Ella ha fotografiado extensivamente por Europa y América, y continúa participando en reconocidas ferias de arte, exhibiciones y colectivas en ciudades como Toronto, Caracas y Seúl. Varios coleccionistas privados en Francia, Corea, Panamá, Venezuela, Canadá y los Estados Unidos han adquirido su obra.

Fotógrafo independiente y artista a tiempo completo, Cristina comparte su tiempo entre proyectos personales y la docencia. En el 2006, entró a ser parte del equipo de trabajo en Roberto Mata Taller de Fotografía en Caracas, y en el 2013 fundó The Developing Tank, una escuela de fotografía en la ciudad de Toronto, Canadá. Su proyecto más reciente, La Camaradería, le ha permitido expandir sus talleres a otros países y trabajar con plataformas online.

Es, además, la autora de un libro para niños que acerca la fotografía de autor a las manos de jóvenes lectores; en el 2010 la Editorial Alfaguara publicó Veo, Veo ¿Qué ves? 1,2,3 para la audiencia latinoamericana.
