Ben Abounassif

Biography

Ben Abounassif was born in Caracas in 1964 to Lebanese parents. He graduated from Tennessee Tech University in 1987 with a B.A. in Business Management. Abounassif’s first contact working in the art world was in 2006 when he launched Leiter Gallery in Miami, a short but successful experience as a co-owner working along with Cuban-born, Miami-based artist Sinuhe Vega Leiter, and Venezuelan-born internationalist & journalist, Jesus Rojas Torres. Abounassif’s innate creativity was highly influenced by working closely with local artists and by visiting their studios and launching exhibitions at Leiter’s, the only gallery in the U.S. that paid a living tribute to the late Cuban musician, Israel “Cachao” López. A year later in 2007, Abounassif exhibited his first art cube on Photo Miami ’07 with Hardcore Contemporary Art in Wynwood. In 2008, Miami art dealer Harvey Oxenberg exhibited Abounassif’s Piece of Love series at Bridge Art Fair ’08 during Art Basel Week in Wynwood. In 2011 with gallerist Aldo Castillo, Abounassif’s all-acrylic digital-cut series were exhibited in China at the American Pavilion, Shanghai Art Fair ’11. Last year, Castillo –in a singular solo installation– exhibited Abounassif’s geometric series at the second edition of ArtSpot hosted at Spectrum Miami Art Fair ’13. In Venezuela, Abounassif’s geometric works on paper are high on demand. The artist’s first and second participation at FIA ’13 and ’14 with Galería Parenthesis were so successful with works being sold before the fair’s official opening. His work always receive high bets from collectors during charities and fundraisers for nonprofits such as Fundación Senosayuda, Fundación Autismo en Voz Alta, Fundación San Juan de Dios, FUNDANA, HIV/AIDS Foundation, Make-a-Wish Foundation, just to name a few. Abounassif ‘s work has been featured online through Eclectic Network’s websites since 2007 and has been recently featured in print magazines such as Hábitat Plus Florida and Ocean Drive Magazine Venezuela. Last month, Abounassif’s work was included in a New Realism modern and contemporary art show at the Dubai-based ProArt Gallery, UAE.

Artist Statement

“In the quest for the perfect line and geometric angle to assemble my pieces, the goal of my work is to show the dichotomy that exists between the object and its shadow, the object meaning the incisions that I make on the material I use, whether is paper or cardboard – my preferred recyclable medium – I find immense joy by observing the forms that gradually emerge on my canvas. A product of my imagination and constant investigation through the development of innumerable tests and models until arriving at the perfect shape in which the line and the angle coincide to form an astonishing visual effect; the latter, is put in motion when the viewer perceives it from different angles, thus the movement and the light become one, just like the object and its shadow, the object cannot shake the shadow off, the two are one, and for me such encounter of observation is an essential quality of mindfulness when looking at my work.”

Biografia

Ben Abounassif nació en Caracas en 1964 de padres libaneses. Se graduó de la Universidad Tecnológica de Tennessee en 1987 con una licenciatura en Administración de Empresas. El primer contacto directo de Abounassif trabajando en el mundo del arte fue en 2006 cuando inauguró Leiter Gallery en Miami, una experiencia corta pero exitosa como co-propietario junto con el artista cubano y restaurateur Sinuhé Vega Leiter, y el internacionalista y periodista venezolano, Jesús Rojas Torres. La creatividad innata de Abounassif se vio bien influenciada al trabajar en estrecha colaboración con artistas locales visitando sus estudios en Miami y presentándolos en exposiciones en Leiter, la única galería en los EE.UU. que rindió un homenaje en vida al músico cubano Israel “Cachao” López. Un año más tarde en 2007, Abounassif exhibió su primer cubo de arte en Photo Miami ’07 con Hardcore Contemporary Art en Wynwood. En 2008, el marchante de arte de Miami Harvey Oxenberg exhibió piezas de Abounassif pertenecientes a su popular serie “Piece of Love” durante Bridge Art Fair ’08 en la semana de Art Basel. En 2011, con el galerista Aldo Castillo, la obra de corte digital de Abounassif fabricada enteramente en acrílico fue exhibida en China en el Pabellón Americano de Shanghai Art Fair ’11. El año pasado, Castillo -en una singular instalación individual- exhibió la serie geométrica de Abounassif durante la segunda edición de ArtSpot en Spectrum Miami Art Fair ’13. En Venezuela, las obras geométricas en papel de Abounassif están en alta demanda. La primera y segunda participación del artista en FIA ’13 y ’14 con la Galería Paréntesis fueron altamente exitosas con obras colocadas a coleccionistas que las adquirieron antes de inaugurar oficialmente la feria. La obra de Abounassif siempre recibe altas apuestas durante eventos de organizaciones benéficas tales como la Fundación Senosayuda, Fundación Autismo en Voz Alta, Fundación San Juan de Dios, FUNDANA, Fundación contra el HIV/AIDS, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Venezuelan Endowment for the Arts, entre otros. El trabajo de Abounassif ha sido documentado desde 2007 a través de sitios web producidos por Eclectic Network en Miami y Orlando. Su obra geométrica ha sido objeto de featured-interviews en revistas impresas como Hábitat Plus Florida y Ocean Drive Venezuela. El mes pasado, el trabajo de Abounassif fue incluido en una muestra colectiva de Nuevo Realismo moderno y contemporáneo en ProArt Gallery en Dubai, Emiratos Arabes Unidos.

Declaracion del Artista

“En la búsqueda de la perfecta línea y ángulo geométrico cuando construyo mis piezas, el objetivo de mi trabajo es mostrar la dicotomía que existe entre el objeto y su sombra, el objeto vale decir, las incisiones que hago sobre el material que utilizo, si es papel o cartón – mi medio preferido reciclable – me llena de inmensa alegría observar las formas que se van naciendo en mi lienzo como producto de mi imaginación y constante investigación sobre este tema. En el desarrollo de muchas pruebas y modelos hasta llegar a la forma perfecta, encuentro el punto en que la línea y el ángulo coinciden para formar un efecto visual sorprendente; este último, se pone en movimiento cuando el espectador lo percibe desde diferentes ángulos, por lo tanto el movimiento y la luz se convierten en uno, así como el objeto y su sombra, el objeto no puede desprenderse de su sombra, los dos son uno, y para mí esa observación es una cualidad esencial de atención cuando se analiza mi trabajo”.
