Biography

Born in Venezuela. Has been on the map of the city of New York as a upcoming latin-American artist for most of the last two decades. Since receiving his first degree in fine art at the School of Visual Arts Cristobal Rojas in 1995 in Caracas, Venezuelan capital. In 1996 at age of 20 he moved to New York, where he received a scholarship to study painting with William Scharf and the Larry Poons at the Art Students League of New York.

In January 1997 Karim became the youngest artist to have a solo exhibition titled “Chaos, the symbols and the Universe” on the wings of Recon Gallery Theatre in Greenwich Village. He has also participated in the well received group show “The emphasis” in the Gallery of Consulate of Venezuela in New York. He has been perfecting his art through continuing education in SVA and the opportunity to participate in both individual and group exhibitions. His talents have been held with several awards, scholarships and artist in residence. He has also participated in rising international Art Fairs.

While still living in his adopted home, New York, in 2002 Karim Marquez took part in the most prestigious contemporary Art competition in his country “Arturo Michelena VX Hall.” As Prize winner Juan Lovera from Venezuela’s National Gallery, which houses his work at the permanent collection. In 2009 was invited to be part of the program Artist in Residence at the Gallery Aferro in Newark, N.J. Recently has been called to offer a tribute to the famous Antoni Tàpies. Spanish master of informalism with Dore Ashton, Robin Cembalest and artists Santi Moix , Amadeo Peñalver, atthe Gallery of well-know Instituto Cervantes of New York at the Amster Yard historic building; a important non-for-profit culture organization created by the Spanish government worldwide.

His work is part of public and private art collections. He currently lives and works in New York city.

Artist Statement

karim’s work is based on the concept of chaos as a balance of material transformation. Development of his body of artwork combines the primal and primary sources that characterize and relate to the beliefs, values, behavior and material objects that constitute a people’s way of life and identity. With this in mind,  he uses unconventional techniques and resources to create a harmony of form together with an aggressive and chaotic aesthetic in a non-objective paintings, sculptures, drawings, sketches, patter designs, sound installations and videos. His goal as a visual artist bring a contemporary and fresh look to the viewer. Referencing our primitive origins. He desires to move away from the aesthetic ideal for art as the vivid portrayal of things. For him, art encompasses all the questions and answers of our chaotic universe.

Biografia

Nacido en Venezuela. Ha estado en el mapa de la ciudad de Nueva York como un artista latinoamericano emergente por más de dos décadas desde que recibió su primer diploma en artes visuales en la escuela de Artes Visuales Cristóbal Rojas en 1995 en Caracas, Venezuela. En 1996 a la edad de 20 se mudo a Nueva York, donde recibió una beca para estudiar pintura con William Scharf y Larry Poons en el Art Students League de Nueva York.

En enero de 1997 Karim se convirtió en el artista más joven en tener una exposición individual llamada “Chaos, los símbolos y el universo” en las alas del Recon Gallery Theater en el Greenwich Village. El también ha participado en la gran exposición en grupo “The Emphasis” en la gallería del consulado de Venezuela en Nueva York. El ha estado perfeccionando su arte a través de la continuación de su educación en SVA y la oportunidad para participar en exposiciones individuales y en grupo. Sus talentos han tenido muchos premios, becas y residencias de artistas. El también ha participado en ferias de arte internacionales.

Mientras todavía vivía en esta casa adoptiva, Nueva York, en 2002 Karim Márquez formo parte en la competencia de arte contemporánea en su país “Arturo Michelena VX Hall.” Como el ganador del premio Juan Lovera de la gallería nacional de Venezuela, que alojó sus obras en la colección permanente. En el 2009 fue invitado a ser parte del programa de artistas en residencia en la Gallery Aferro en Neward, NJ. Recientemente fue llamado a ofrecer un homenaje al famoso Antoni Tapies. El maestro español de informalismo con Dore Ashton, Robin Cembalest y el artista Santi Moix, Amadeo Peñalver, en la galería del famoso Instituto Cervantes de Nueva York en el edificio histórico en el Master Yard; una organización de cultura sin fines de lucro creada por el gobierno español al rededor del mundo.

Sus obras forman parte de colecciones de arte privadas y publicas. Hoy en día vive y trabaja en la ciudad de Nueva York.

Artist Statement

El trabajo de Karim está basado en los conceptos del caos como un balance de transformación material. El desarrollo de la cantidad de obras de arte combinan las fuentes que caracterizan y relacionan las creencias, valores, conducta y objetos materiales que constituyen a la manera que las vida de las personas y identidad. Con eso en mente, el usa técnicas poco convencionales y recursos para crear armonía de forma junta con una estética agresiva y caótica en pinturas  de no- objetos, esculturas, dibujos, patrón de diseño, instalaciones de sonido y videos. Su gol como un artista visual trae un look contemporáneo y fresco al observador. Referenciando nuestros orígenes primitivos. El desea moverse fuera de la estética ideal de arte como el vivido retrato de las cosas. Para el, arte engloba todas las preguntas y respuestas en nuestro universo caótico.
