 Biography

Lauren Kalman is a visual artist whose practice is invested in contemporary craft, video, photography and performance. Through her work she investigates beauty, adornment, body image, value, and consumer culture. Raised in the Midwest, Kalman completed her MFA in Art and Technology from the Ohio State University and earned a BFA with a focus in Metals from the Massachusetts College of Art.

Kalman exhibits and lectures internationally. Her work had been featured in exhibitions at the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Craft, The Museum of Arts and Design, Cranbrook Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum Houston, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the deCordova Museum, among others. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and other institutions. Her work has been exhibited and screened internationally including South Africa, Argentina, Slovakia, France, Switzerland, Sweden, England, Ireland, and Egypt.

She has been awarded residencies at the Bemis Center, the Australian National University, the Corporation of Yaddo, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Brush Creek Arts Foundation, Haystack, and Santa Fe Art Institute. She has received Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, Puffin Foundation West and ISE Cultural Foundation Emerging Curator grants.

She has taught at institutions including Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Currently she is an assistant professor at Wayne State University.

Artist Statement

My work focuses on the creation, documentation, and display of sculpture, adornment, photographs, video, and performance.  Through my work, I bring to light uncomfortable connections in visual culture between body image, media, class, and style.

Through my work I investigate how the pursuit of human beauty has left its mark on the body. Today bodily ideals are sought after through the use of objects and materials placed on and over the skin. The act of covering and adding to the body transforms it from a natural state toward an icon of perfection. In my work, I investigate jewelry, objects, and garments as agents of this transformation.

Skin is the body’s interface with the world, and has been one of the focuses of my work. It serves as protection for the body and as a signifier of the internal conditions of the body. The surface of the body, often represents the body as a whole because it is the most visible part of the body. Blushing, rashes, blemishes and sores are visual signals of the unseen. This language of the external is not definitive. Marks and contortions on the exterior of the body can have multiple meanings. A reddening of the face can project either internal dysfunction or arousal. These multiple meanings are often reflected in contemporary ideals and images, which mimic ailments such as extreme thinness and replicate expressions of pain in sexually explicit advertising. In these presentations, the ideal and the ill or abnormal merge.

Diseases like acne, cancer, herpes, and elephantiasis, or physical trauma like amputation and facial reconstruction surgery, are presented as jeweled infections, fabric growths, or wearable electronic instruments. They are hybrids of the grotesque or undesirable aspects of the body and objects we associate with beauty, status, health, wealth or power.

Lauren Kalman es una artista visual que ha invertido su practica en el arte contemporáneo, video, fotografía y actuación. A través de su trabajo ella ha investigado la belleza, el adornado, la imagen corporal, el valor y la cultura del consumo. Criada en el medio oeste de Estados Unidos, Kalman completó su licenciado en las bellas artes con una concentración en metales en el Massachusetts College of Art.

Kalman ha expuesto y enseñado internacionalmente. Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en exhibiciones en el Renwick Gallery, en el Museo Smithsonian de Arte, en el Museum of Contemporary Craft, el Museum of Arts and Design, el Cranbrook Art Museum, el Contemporary Art Museum de Houston, el Museum of Fine Arts en Boston, y el deCordova Museum, entre otros. Declaracion de artista

Mi trabajo se centra en la creación, documentación y la presentación de la escultura, adornos, fotografía, video y actuación. A través de mi trabajo, traigo luz a conexiones incomodas en la cultura visual entre la imagen corporal, medios de comunicación, clase social y estilo.

A través de mi trabajo investigo como la búsqueda de la belleza humana ha dejado una marca en el cuerpo. Los ideales corporales de hoy en día son buscados a través del uso de objetos y materiales colocados en y sobre la piel. El acto de cubrir y añadir al cuerpo lo transforma de un estado natural a un icono de perfección. En mi trabajo, yo investigo joyas, objetos, y prendas textiles como agentes de esta transformación.

La piel es el interfaz del cuerpo con el mundo, ha sido uno de los centros de mi trabajo. Sirve como protección al cuerpo y como un significante de las condiciones internas del cuerpo. La superficie del cuerpo, a menudo representa el cuerpo como uno porque es la parte mas visible del cuerpo.

Sonrojo, erupciones, manchas y llagas son señales visuales de lo invisible. Este lenguaje de lo externo no es definitivo. Marcas y contorsiones en el exterior del cuerpo pueden tener diferentes significados.

Un enrojecimiento a la cara puede proyectar una disfunción o una excitación interna. Estos significados múltiples son reflexionados a menudo en los ideales contemporáneos e imágenes que mímican dolencias como delgadez extrema y replican expresiones de dolor en la publicidad sexualmente explícita. En estas presentaciones, lo ideal y lo enfermo o  anormal se unen.

Enfermedades como el acné, el cáncer, herpes y elefantiasis, o traumas físicos como amputaciones y cirugías de reconstrucción facial, se presentan como infecciones con joyas, crecimientos de tejidos, o instrumentos electrónicos portátiles son híbridos de lo grotesco y aspectos indeseables del cuerpo y objetos que asociamos con belleza, estatus social, salud, riqueza y poder.
