Pablo Griss

Biography

Pablo Gris was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1971 and graduated from Columbia University School of Visual Arts (1996 ) in New York, where he lived and worked. He currently works from his studios in Berlin and in Panama City where he has resided since 2008. Pablo has participated in several group and solo exhibitions in the U.S.A, Europe and Latin America. Griss’s work was featured in the book “100 Painters of Tomorrow” written by Kurt Beers and published by Thames – Hudson in 2014.

Artist statement

Obsessed with space; my work embodies my need to create atmospheres. Not recognizable ones, but rather spaces that reveal themselves to us in a peculiar way; more poetic than literary. I rely on abstract shapes to achieve this. Proposing an abstract dialogue that goes beyond colors and elements, objects depart from geometric shapes and the suggested space is reinforced with the use of sharp lines, sometimes in very bright colors, to enhance overall visual depth. The backdrop of these spaces, in a very painterly form, is rendered using drippings, transparencies, layers, gestures, and erasures. The complexity of these atmospheres yields different visual planes to the observer. As a contemporary artist I aim to create atemporal pieces, that don’t belong to any specific tendency.

From 100 Painters of Tomorrow

Through an approach toward abstraction that incorporates a wide range of styles and media, Pablo Griss constructs poetic interpretations via spatial juxtapositions. ‘I am obsessed with space’ he admits. ‘My work embodies my need to create atmospheres, not recognizable ones but rather spaces that reveal themselves in a peculiar, more poetic way’. Uniting an accomplished geometric draftsmanship with a loose and unconventional painterly style, Griss’s strongly expressionist work weaves back and forth between angular lines and stream-of-consciousness mark-making. Through such stylistic freedom and a devotion to a layered, palimpsest-like approach, the artist lends a sense of visual depth to his works. He also emphasizes the surreal nature of his backgrounds, both inviting the viewer into their environment while simultaneously reminding the viewer of their pure intangibility. At times, Griss’s work seems entirely reliant on geometric abstraction; at other times, as though in a fit of dynamism, these same paintings appear to embody wild organic movement. Perhaps the works find their strongest form of expression when Griss’s regimented shapes begin to collapse upon themselves, suggesting so much more than mere patterning. ‘As a painter in front of the canvas I explore my weaknesses,’ Griss confides. Exploring materiality, including collage, mixed media and gold leaf, he seems eager to establish and then deconstruct his own sense of order, both inside and outside the studio space.

Pablo Griss nació en Caracas, Venezuela en 1971 y se graduó del Columbia University School of Visual Arts (1996) donde vivió y trabajo. Hoy en día trabaja desde sus estudios en Berlín y en Panamá City donde ha sido residente desde el 2008. Pablo ha participado en varias exposiciones individuales y en grupo en los Estados Unidos, Europa y Latinoamérica. Sus obras han sido destacadas en el libro “100 Painters of Tomorrow” escrito por Kurt Beers y publicado por Thames- Hudson en el 2014.

Declaracion de artista

Obsesionado con el espacio; mis obras incorporan la necesidad para crear ambientes. No unos que se reconozcan, pero espacios que se revelan ellos mismos en una manera peculiar; más poética que literaria. Yo dependo de formas abstractas para poder lograr esto. Proponiendo un dialogo abstracto que va mas allá de colores y elementos, objetos que salen de figuras geométricas y el espacio sugerido se refuerza con líneas agudas, a veces colores brillantes para mejorar la profundidad visual. El fondo de estos espacios, es hecha usando goteos, transparencias, capas, gestos y tachaduras. La complexidad de estos ambientes produce diferentes planos visuales para observar. Como un artista contemporáneo yo trato de crear piezas atemporales que no forman parte de ninguna tendencia especifica.

A través del acercamiento hacia la abstracción que incorpora una amplia gama de estilos y medios, Pablo Griss construye interpretaciones poéticas a través de yuxtaposiciones espaciales. “Estoy obsesionado con el espacio” el admite, “mis obras incorporan la necesidad de crear ambientes, no reconocidos pero espacios que se revelan ellos mismos en una manera peculiar; más poética”. Uniendo su habilidad para el dibujo geométrico con un estilo pictórico suelto y poco convencional, las obras de Griss son muy expresionistas que tejen de ida y vuelta entre líneas angulares y corriente de la conciencia. Mediante a tanta libertad artística y devoción a la aproximación a las capas palimpsestas, el artista presta un sentido de profundidad visual en sus obras. El también acentúa la naturaleza surrealista en sus fondos, invitando al observador a un ambiente mientras a la ves recordando al observador su intangibilidad pura. A veces, las obras de Griss parecen totalmente en abstracción geométrica, otras veces como si en un ataque de dinamismo, estas mismas obras parecen incorporar movimientos orgánicos. Quizás las obras encuentran su forma de expresión mas fuerte cuando las formas rígidas empiezan a colapsar entre ellas, sugiriendo mucho más que el mero patrón. “Como un pintor en frente del lienzo yo exploro mis debilidades” dice Griss. Explorando materialidad, incluyendo collages, técnicas mixtas y hojas de oro, se ve ansioso para establecer y después de construir su propio sentido de orden, adentro y afuera de su estudio.
