Veronica Sanchis

VERONICA SANCHIS

is a Venezuelan born photographer based in New York City. She graduated in 2010 with a BA (Hons) Photojournalism at University of Wales Trinity Saint David Swansea, Wales. Shortly after graduating Veronica was nominated for The Guardian Media Awards Student Photographer of the Year and the Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales Photographic Portrait – The National Portrait Gallery – commission in London. In 2011 one of Veronica’s images was selected for the Migration Museum, 100 Images of Migration, exhibition that has been presented at Hackney Museum, London, Heritage Gallery, Greenwich, London, School of Museum Studies in Leicester University. Leicester, England, and many more locations. 100 Images of Migration is an exhibition that continues to travel throughout the UK.

In 2013, Verónica started to collaborate with the cultural magazine, Ventana Latina, based in London. She created the monthly feature, Fotografia Latina, for which she runs monthly interviews with photographers who work in Latin America. More recently, she launched the digital platform, Foto Féminas, which promotes through monthly online features the work of female Latin American and Caribbean photographers.

Artist Statement

Veronica has always had a love for storytelling and through her photography she is interested in building visual narratives. She works both in the traditional documentary photography practice (as in her series, 80,000) as well as more conceptual visual expression: more recently self-portraiture and appropriated family photographs and objects (To the Young Wife (working title) and La Caja de Aurora). Elements of memory and femininity have clear presence in her work.
